Back and sciatica pain

What is it?

Back and sciatica pain are common conditions that affect the lower spine, hips, and legs. Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve—the longest nerve in the body—becomes compressed or irritated, often due to a herniated disc, muscle tightness, poor posture, or spinal misalignment. This can lead to sharp, burning, or shooting pain that travels from the lower back through the buttocks and down one leg. In some cases, people may also experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. Chronic back and sciatica pain can make it difficult to sit, stand, or move comfortably, and if left untreated, can affect daily activities and mobility.

How Physiotherapy Helps

  • Pain relief techniques: Uses methods such as heat therapy, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation (like TENS) to reduce inflammation and ease nerve irritation.
  • Manual therapy: Hands-on treatment to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and relieve nerve compression.
  • Exercise programs: Strengthens the core, improves flexibility, and corrects posture to prevent recurring pain.
  • Education and posture correction: Teaches proper lifting, sitting, and movement techniques to reduce pressure on the spine.
  • Individualized treatment plans: Targets the root cause of the pain, helping restore function and improve quality of life.
